"Enargilo" is the natural evolution of our journey, which began in November 2018 at the ceramics school where we both studied until June 2020. Our acquaintance blossomed into friendship, and that friendship transformed into a partnership—one we now consider far more than just a collaboration.
In fact, we prefer to define it as a craft workshop (technitis). This term perfectly captures the essence of our studio: where handcraftsmanship takes precedence over machinery, and where the objects we create are both useful to daily life and born of artistic expression.
They say that "chemistry" is essential for people to coexist and collaborate harmoniously—and this truth is deeply mirrored in our ceramics. The magic of ceramics is inherently chemical: it lives in the clay, the glazes, and every decoration applied. Simply put, without chemical compounds, ceramics simply cannot exist.
Our relationship is much the same. Just as the four elements of nature—earth, water, fire, and air—are required to transform clay into ceramic, they also play a symbolic yet vital role in our own partnership.
The meaning behind 'Enargilo'...
We crafted the word "Enargilo" with love. "Argilos" means clay, while the prefix "En" comes from entos (within). Thus, it signifies "The Inside" or "The Inner Self."
While clay can be shaped into countless forms, the concept of "Inside" holds only two profound meanings:
The Interior of Our Souls: The essence we strive to imprint onto our ceramic creations.
The Need to Be "Inside the Clay": The immersive state of being fully present in the act of creation.
"Enargilo" encapsulates everything we wish to communicate through this wordplay. When you mold clay with love, transforming it into an object, you are essentially placing your soul inside it. This is exactly what happens at Enargilo.
So, we invite you to step inside the clay.
Our Journey
From those first steps and early experiments, the studio we are today stands as the realization of a conscious choice: how we want to live and move forward.
It was a bold leap. We left behind entirely different career paths and more "secure" prospects, choosing instead to build a life through ceramics. We were fully aware of the challenges involved in sustaining a small artisan business in Greece.
Yet, our insatiable need to create was the force that pushed us to take this step. Alongside that, our desire to share the joy of creation and the profound calm that working with clay offers so generously, is what drives us daily to offer our knowledge and experiences to our students.
